I am Boli Shi, from the Class of 2020 of the MA in Communication program-- Film, TV & New Media Concentration (FTNM), School of Culture and Creativity. I remember that the first time I stepped into the school, I wasn't yet a student at UIC. At that time, I barely knew that I would be fortunate enough to join UIC to pursue further study.
Reading is one of my favorite habits. During my study at UIC, the place where I spent most of my time and which left the deepest impression on me was the library. I finished most of the film scripts and course assignments at the library. I could spend a whole day staying at the library when there was no class to attend.
The school library seems to carry a faint aroma of plants, allowing me to quickly calm my mind each time I study here, despite the often unbearably hot weather in Lingnan. Winter, however, developed a different feeling. Take Christmas for example. A gorgeous Christmas tree adorned with colorful ornaments was displayed in the middle of the library during the Christmas holiday. Students could gather around the Christmas tree and enjoy their reading journey.
The most memorable part of my school study was the moot court, a true battle of wits. Personally, I believe this is what sets our school apart from others: Students can truly immerse themselves in the course. Students could learn a lot from this kind of practical course.
The school's canteen is also worth mentioning. The food offered here could cater diverse needs of students and faculty members from different nationalities, featuring Hong Kong-style cuisine as well as cuisines from other regions.
When having lunch and dinner, I would purposefully choose a window seat with my friends. Through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, I could see the lake nearby, and sometimes I could also spot swans leisurely resting on the lake.
Overall, the most rewarding aspect of my school study is its international teaching philosophy and its emphasis on practice-based teaching and learning. Students gain not only knowledge but also one unique perspective to explore the world and society. This is a valuable asset that will benefit students for life.
After graduation, with the support of my family and friends, I started my own film business. I owe much of my courage to the school, and the influence of my teachers and classmates, who encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. I firmly believe that UIC offers limitless possibilities and excitement for students.
