Guest Speaker: Dr. Tabe Bergman

Abstract: This talk aims to clarify three aspects related to journalistic practices, with reference to the speaker's time working as an editor with two news agencies, using examples including the reporting on the pop star Britney Spears. The three aspects are: journalists' responsibility for the product they produce, their intent, and their conformity to organizational imperatives. The talk identifies a sometimes overlooked factor in explaining journalists' compliance with the rules set by the organization they work for, namely the utter normalcy or "day-to-day-ness" of the social and material context in which work takes place. The talk argues that journalistic practices remain unchanged in part because they are intimately intertwined with the realities of everyday work.

About the speaker: Tabe Bergman is an Assistant Professor in and Acting Head of the Department of Media and Communication at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. His research is focused on international Journalism. He is the co-editor (with Jesse Hearns-Branaman) of Journalism and Foreign Policy (contracted with Routledge).
