About the Film:
The film is based on the memoir of André Devigny, a member of the French Resistance imprisoned in Montluc Prison by the occupying Germans during World War II. However, the protagonist is referred to by a different name in the film.
In 1957, Bresson's film premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and has since become one of the director's most admired works.
