On October 8th, a landmark event unfolded at UIC as President Chen observed the orchestra rehearsal, symbolizing a key milestone in the university’s ongoing commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement. Held in CC105, this special occasion was elevated by the distinguished presence of President Chen, whose participation underscored the critical role of the arts within UIC’s liberal arts education framework.

The evening began with opening remarks from Professor Thomas Alexander Stein, Head of the Music Department, who extended a warm welcome to President Chen and introduced the esteemed faculty that have played an essential role in the growth of the UIC Orchestra. Professor Stein shared his aspirations for the orchestra, emphasizing the department’s focus on nurturing both musical prowess and cultural expression. He highlighted the orchestra’s expanding capabilities and the promising future filled with performance opportunities and artistic achievements.

Following Professor Stein, President Chen delivered a thought-provoking speech, expressing his admiration for the Music Department's achievements and the orchestra’s notable progress. He spoke passionately about how UIC’s liberal arts philosophy aligns with fostering a vibrant and diverse artistic community. President Chen stressed that music transcends cultural barriers, acting as a bridge that connects people and preserves cultural heritage, while also enriching both personal and communal experiences. Conductor Mr. Xu Li took the stage next, offering his heartfelt gratitude to the university for its unwavering support. Mr. Xu outlined his vision of maintaining an environment rooted in collaboration, creativity, and distinction, in harmony with the university’s mission of advancing the arts.
