On May 14, 2025, as one of the signature events celebrating the 20th anniversary of Beijing Normal -Hong Kong Baptist University, the original five-act campus musical drama Liberal Arts Romance, was successfully staged at the BNBU Performance Theatre with two performances held at noon and in the evening.
BNBU President Professor Chen Zhi, Vice President Professor Huang Yu, along with faculty and distinguished guests from various schools and departments, attended the performances. They joined the audience of students in enjoying the show and took commemorative group photos with the full cast and crew after the event.
The drama tells the story of four BNBU students from different cities who meet during freshman orientation. Through their journey of personal growth—marked by confusion, resistance, and misunderstandings—they gradually transform over four years of study and practice. Guided by the spirit of liberal arts education, they explore, mature, and ultimately compose a youthful ode to BNBU’s core values and educational philosophy.
Structured with five themes—“Approaching Liberal Arts,” “Understanding Liberal Arts,” “Experiencing Liberal Arts,” “Practicing Liberal Arts,” and “Promoting Liberal Arts”—the musical showcases the unique features of BNBU’s community, including the Meal-with-Your-Professor programme, summer programme, graduation ceremony, and more. The storyline is engaging and emotionally resonant, with vivid staging, dynamic music, and heartfelt performances. The production received enthusiastic applause from the audience and deeply moved many in attendance.
President Chen Zhi congratulated the team on its success and praised the cast and crew for their outstanding performances. One faculty member commented, “This original musical had all the essential elements of a great production—heartfelt storytelling, compelling characters, and a powerful message. The Story of Yang Jie, the Beichuan orphan who dedicated herself to volunteer work in Qingyuan, truly touched my soul.
With over 60 students from various departments across BUBN participating, the musical was written and produced by Ms. Wang Jie, Associate Department Head of the Music Department of BNBU’s school of Culture and Creativity, who also served as the music director. The production also benefited from professional guidance by choreographer Mr. Ricky Tong, and theatre Instructor Mr. Han Xiao from Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai.
The performance not only added vibrancy to the college’s 20th anniversary celebrations, but also served as a meaningful exploration of the integration between artistic creation and educational practice. It stands as a vivid expression of BNBU’s commitment to liberal arts ideals and its continued dedication to nurturing well-rounded, socially responsible talents.
