Abstract of the talk

Music notation is a powerful tool to represent sounds and musical ideas although it demands from the musician a thorough understanding of these ideas and their development in time. By analyzing the music score a performer can grasp the essential points of the composition and interpret the content with a clear perspective.

This talk deals with basic elements of music analysis for a performance, focusing on:

1) The tone quality and sound production demanded by a music composition.

2) The structure and sections of a work as chapters of a musical idea developed in time

3) The phrasing and directional forces behind the music

Several examples will be analyzed, including excerpts by: Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, Mozart's Piano Sonata in C Major K. 545, and Bach's Inventions.

About the Speaker  

Dr. Fernando MARTIN PASTOR currently works as Acting Programme Director and an Assistant Professor of Music at UIC. He studied at the University of California, King's College London, University of Southampton, University of Washington and Conservatorio Superior de Musica in Madrid. He specializes in music composition, creativity and music analysis. Dr. Martin aims to promote new music exploring new territories in instrumental and vocal music, mixing genres, traditions, classical and popular music.
