Shift to Grotesqueness and Liveliness: Pottery figurines in Eastern Han Szechwan

In line with the popularity of the cultural and museum industry in recent years, this article takes the Eastern Han Dynasty Sichuan terracotta figurines as the object of study, striving to firstly outline the artistic characteristics possessed by the Eastern Han Dynasty Sichuan terracotta figurines. Based on the observation method of the online exhibits, the terracotta figurines in Eastern Han period are generally characterized by Extensive Depictions of Life, Natural Simplicity and Elegance, and Vivid Expressions with Grotesqueness. Based on the extensive archival analysis and continuous observation of the exhibits, the article then analyzes the causes of these artistic characteristics from three macroscopic perspectives: political-economic, socio-cultural, and particularity of Sichuan. It is expected to provide a reference for readers interested in Sichuan terracotta art and to provide a new theoretical framework for the study of sculpture.
