Speaker: Dr Alex Sigman

Associate Professor and Chair of the Music program at the International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) of Yamanashi Gakuin University in Kofu, Japan

Taking as its point of departure the seminal Philips Pavilion—arguably the first immersive multimedia installation in history—and Richard Wagner's concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (the "total art work"), this lecture-demonstration will examine historical and recent examples of works employing meaningful interactions between visual media (light and image), movement/gesture, and music/sound. Topics will include contrasting notions of "visual music," improvisation triggered by graphic and animated notation, real-time film/video scoring, and telematic performance. Using Max/Jitter, the Decibel Score Player iPad app, as well as conventional instruments, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in performance activities.

Dr Sigman completed his doctorate in Music Composition at Stanford University in 2010. He is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Music program at the International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) of Yamanashi Gakuin University in Kofu, Japan. In 2013-2014, he undertook a musical research residency at Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique, a French institute for science about music and sound and avant-garde electro-acoustical art music.
