Course overview


1. The core programme is taught in English, including all the essential courses found in reputable universities and music institutions worldwide that allow graduates to get further studies abroad.


2. Taught by an international faculty, the teachers come from Australia, America and other countries. Moreover, this strong teaching team helps students develop advanced skills in performance that enable them to distinguish themselves in their future careers.


3. The programme provides world-class facilities, such as well-equipped practice rooms with complete series of Steinway pianos, Pro Tools recording and media studios. Acoustic superb performance venues include rehearsal studios and various concert halls to provide students with the best facilities and environment to practice and perform.


4. Reasonable teacher-student ratio: the liberal art education of UIC focuses on a full range of care and service for students in terms of learning, life, family, psychological, career development. There are many opportunities for students to pursue interdisciplinary project work with arts, science and commerce programmes, aiming to nurture graduates with global vision, developing their advanced critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills through a comprehensive study.

The curriculum structure includes 3 categories:


1.1 Stream-specific Courses


The stream-specific courses focus on developing high level technical skills and knowledge in the chosen area. Performance Skills I/II and Advanced Performance I/II provide the student with a strong foundation in technical skills relating to their selected musical instrument as well as knowledge of related repertoire. Thereafter, the Principal Study courses guide the student to prepare them for their Final Year Project recital.

Ensemble Courses


Students have many opportunities to join various music ensembles and gain the necessary experience, such as working and performing with other musicians. For Ensemble A: I/II and Ensemble B: I/II: Students select from a range of available ensembles, including Orchestra, Choir, Chamber Music Ensemble and piano accompaniment.

1. 3 Music theory and history relate courses


The music courses found in music schools worldwide are related to music theory, musicology, music analysis and music history, providing the musicians with a strong foundation of technical and theoretical skills.

Students study two semesters of Music Theory and Ear Training in the first year, covering core concepts and skills essential for studying music in more depth later. Also, in courses Form and Style I/II and Music Harmony and Analysis I/II, students examine musical works in detail, analyse selected works and apply musical techniques to complete short composition projects.

Students explore critical perspectives on the relationships between music and broader social and cultural contexts in these courses. Specifically, these courses entail close-reading of selected texts, research techniques and the submission of essays.

Apart from the major required courses, students must complete related units of Major Elective Course, General Education course and Free Elective Course.

2. Major Elective (ME) Course


A distinctive feature of the proposed MUS programme is that the major elective courses can span the five categories:


1. Vocal

2. Keyboard musicianship

3. Music education

4. Pop-music, film music, music for new media

5. Others: Music technology, Instrument accompaniment, Musical Theatre, Music business management, Ethnomusicology (with a distinct focus on Chinese music), etc


These areas allow students with particular interests to pursue careers related to one or more of these areas with the opportunity to study several courses in the field. Regarding the film music and music technology electives, the design of these course syllabi facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations with students from related programmes such as CTV and MAD.

The 24 units of Free Electives could be used by students to (a) spend a semester abroad; (b) take a minor or (c) take more courses offered by the teaching units.

In combination with discipline-based knowledge and skills, free electives contribute to a unique student learning experience with flexibility and diversity.


English enhancement course:

Students from the Music Performance programme have more opportunities to enhance their English. Some of these are required to participate in an English Enhancement Program to develop students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
