[THEM Event Review] SEG Master Class - Science for Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism

On April 18, 2025, the Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management Programme of the Department of Culture, Creativity and Design, School of Culture and Creativity, jointly with SEG Swiss Education Group, invited Prof. Giuseppina Menconi from César Ritz Colleges Switzerland to give a lecture on " Science for Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism " in CC403.



During the lecture, Prof. Menconi focused on the hospitality and tourism industries' sustainable development. She stressed the significance of green chemistry in reducing the hotel industry's harmful substances and environmental impact, thus supporting sustainable development. Regarding corporate social responsibility, she said enterprises should meet social and environmental obligations while making profits, which benefits brand image and competitiveness.


As for plastic pollution, Prof. Menconi analyzed its situation and trends in the hospitality and tourism industries. She noted the severe ocean plastic pollution and urged the hotel industry to cut plastic use. On waste management, she shared trends and development directions, encouraging innovative strategies to reduce the ecological footprint.



This lecture combined research with cases, offering practical ideas for the hospitality and tourism industries' sustainable development. It deepened participants' understanding of industry sustainability. Hopefully, these concepts will be widely used, guiding the industries towards a green future.



The lecturer, Dr. Giuseppina Menconi, is an associate professor at César Ritz Colleges. She holds a Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry from Durham University (UK), a Post-Doctoral Research position at University College London, a Master's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Piemonte, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Derby. She also has years of investment banking experience and is a TEDx speaker.
