1. How has UIC made a difference to you?
My four years at UIC had really changed me a lot, both in terms of my studies and my daily life, and I am a much different person than I was four years ago.
UIC has helped me realize the importance of living a productive and meaningful life. Procrastination has always been one of the most significant illnesses of modern young people, and when I was in the junior years, I was also a heavy procrastinator. I was very uncomfortable when I experienced various deadlines and group discussions, as my professors, classmates, and the teaching system were like a relentless whip driving me forward. At first, I felt tired, and I felt that the study and life at that time was far from what I thought I would be doing in college. But after one semester, I basically adapted to this state of keeping moving forward, and although I felt hard in the process, at the end of each semester, I felt a sense of accomplishment and I appreciated my efforts and self-discipline. At UIC, I experienced a productive learning and living experience that has enriched me and given new meaning and direction to my life.
UIC has kept me active and motivated and has taught me what it means to work hard. I believe that many people have certain stereotypes about UIC, such as "rich kid" and "aristocratic school". As an experienced student at UIC, I will be responsible for telling people who have such a perception that this is not the case.
UIC has given me a deeper experience of cultural intermingling. As an international institution, I have experienced classes prepared by professors from all over the world, and I have experienced the culture, customs, and accents of different countries, which has been a very meaningful and interesting experience for me. The university itself is also very focused on international cultural exchange and integration, and we have a very rich cultural community and cultural activities, and I have participated in many such activities in the past four years, each time deepening my understanding of diverse cultures and deepening my curiosity for the world. UIC also attaches great importance to the education and development of Chinese traditional culture, and provides students with many opportunities to engage with traditional culture both in and out of the classroom.
2. What do you think is the unique competitiveness that UIC brings to you compared to those who studied at traditional 985/211 universities in China?
For me, UIC has enhanced my personal skills and independence of mind. In terms of studies, UIC's curriculum requires students to be able to think independently and complete projects independently. Whether it is an individual project or a group project, independence is a very important skill. In the process of learning, we get a lot of ideas, trials and errors, and we can get careful guidance and effective feedback from professors.
The teaching at UIC has been effective in improving students' language skills; UIC is an all-English college and students' English skills are generally strong, and I think my speaking and writing skills have been improved during my four years at UIC. Not only my English skills, but also my Chinese expression skills have been well trained. This is a very competitive advantage.
UIC's unique teaching model provides students with abundant educational resources and opportunities. With the help of group projects, students' leadership and teamwork skills are well-trained, which may be less noticed and concentrated in other domestic universities. After four years of refinement, we are comfortable with how to move projects forward, improve team efficiency, and lead groups to complete projects.
Finally, I believe that UIC has developed students' time management skills. Efficiency is very important in study, work and life. Students are more disciplined and efficient in both life and study.
