On April 15th 2024, led by the course instructor, Associate Professor Dr. Purrie NG, and Assistant Instructor Ms. Doris XIE, students from Event Planning and Management course in BNU-HKBU United International College (UIC) participated in a site visit to the University Hall at the campus. The guest speaker was Mr. Tom WU, a senior technician from the Estates Management Office, the students gained practical experience in event planning and stage performance management after listening to the talk.

1. Introduction to Event Planning

Mr. WU began the visit by discussing key factors in event planning. He covered aims, objectives, working teams and timeline. This overview provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the planning processes (including Stage Performances, Graduation Ceremonies, High-Table Dinners or Seminars etc.).  Then he detailed the logistic procedures for stage performances, relating it to "Event Design Operations". He also explained the functions of high-tech projectors, professional sound systems, stage equipment and auditorium facilities. This hands-on approach allowed students to gain practical understanding in a pleasant ambience.

2. Hands-on Experience

After the lecture, Mr. WU demonstrated the operation techniques of the lighting console and sound mixing console in the control room. Students could visualize different lighting effects on stage. They also had the opportunity to operate the audio-visual equipment, deepening their understanding of how audiovisual elements impact the audience's experience of performers on stage.

3. Real-World Learning

This field trip provided students with a unique opportunity to step out of the classroom and gain first-hand experience in event planning and stage performance management. The visit left a deeper impression on the students, allowing them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications in a real-world setting.

Through this meaningful site visit, students were able to turn their classroom knowledge into new experiences, gaining valuable insights into the practical aspects of event planning and management. The combination of expert guidance, hands-on demonstrations, and real-world context provided an enriching learning experience that will undoubtedly benefit the students in their future careers.
