On December 2, 2024, the CCM2093 Culture, Creativity, and Management Course, led by Course Instructor Dr. Iceman Leung and Assistant Instructor Ms. Yi Xie, went on a field trip to the Zhuhai City Balcony for an inspection. The field trip was honored to have Mr. Kan Kwan, the Chief Designer of the City Balcony, to introduce the design concept and its impact on the development of Zhuhai City. This helped guide the students to think precisely from actual projects and deepen their understanding of the connections between cultural industries and the environment, socio-economic factors, and humanities, thereby guiding the students in studying cultural industry management.

In a striking transformation, the pre-construction images of the City Balcony area reveal a landscape once marred by disconnection between the mountains and the sea, obstructed views, lack of amenities, and chaotic pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The design of the City Balcony commercial district has effectively addressed these issues with the introduction of a pedestrian overpass, which not only resolved the problem of mixed traffic but also reestablished the connection between the roads and buildings that were previously cut off access to the natural landscape. It has also provided visitors with superior vantage points to appreciate the coastline's scenic beauty. Furthermore, the construction of the City Balcony has bridged the gap from the beach to the adjacent Jingshan Park, achieving an integration of mountain and sea, and creating a continuous flow of visitors along a single, cohesive path. This seamless integration has not only enhanced the visitor experience but also contributed to the area's development as a cohesive and attractive destination.
City Balcony Phase I
Following the initial visit, students proceeded to the Phase II square of the City Balcony, where Mr. Kwan highlighted the integration of architectural design with the surrounding landscape as a key concept in the second phase's development. The architectural design seamlessly incorporates the backdrop of mountains and water, preserving the overall aesthetic of the landscape while complementing the natural scenery. Additionally, the design provides excellent spots for visitors to take memorable photos, creating a gathering place for people and a dynamic, vital center of the city.
City Balcony Phase II
During the entire presentation, Mr. Kwan stood from the perspective of the cultural industry, viewing architecture as a part of culture. The purpose of architecture is to culture, reflect culture through architecture, and develop culture. This approach provided students in Cultural and Creative Management with many universal paths for thinking in the study and work of the cultural industry. Through this field trip, students have gained a deeper understanding of the cultural industry, establishing a bridge from theoretical learning to practical application.
